Digital Media Convergence Ch 2

As the daughter of tech people, I have grown up around computers my entire life. I remember going to work with my parents and stepping into the processing rooms. It felt like I was stepping into a Zenon movie. There were towers of hardware looming over me and the screens had binary scrolling through. Everything was pristine and shiny, and we were not allowed to touch anything (honestly that was a good call).  I used to walk through the room so carefully and wouldn’t bring anything that was messy. The memories are so clear.

My family had a desktop at home that we all used until the late 2000s. My parents slowly both got laptops and pagers and then blackberries and then the work and cell phones merged into the same phone. Our family’s tech consumption grew during the 2010s. We went from having a desktop and a few laptops for everyone to have a laptop for each person, smartphones, and tablets. During this time, I was the first person in my family to own a MacBook. When it came time for my brother and I to get new laptops I begged my parents for a MacBook. I ended up doing a lot of research and saved up every bit of allowance I could. I loved that MacBook pro and used it until it was on death’s door in 2016. After I bought my MacBook the rest of my family slowly moved over to Mac OS products. I almost have forgotten how to use a PC.  I love how easy all of the shortcuts are, hit a few buttons, and bing bang boom it is done!

With the change in technology we have moved from having huge bulky towers and floppy disks to thin laptops with USB drives and now tablets with cloud storage. For me, I will always remember getting the first kindle. I have always loved reading and had more than one argument with my mom about the price of a book. She, understandably, did not want to pay $25.00+ for a book whereas I desperately wanted to read that next book in a series. My mom had a first-gen kindle and I was lucky enough to inherit it when she upgraded to a newer one. The kindle was (and still is!) all of my books in my pocket! I was no longer having to lug an 8oo page book around with me everywhere. Thanks to the cloud it is all in my ultra-light device.

What kind of computer do you use? Let me know in the comments down below!
